Partnership secures new offer for Birmingham’s Almshouse Community
Birmingham’s oldest charity secured a new contract which will see it take on the management of 31 additional homes in the neighbouring borough of Walsall.
Lench’s Trust have agreed an arrangement to manage and oversee the four Almshouse charities across six historic buildings across the town.
The charities, namely The Henry Boys Almshouse Charity, Harpers, Marsh & Crumps Almshouses, The Catherine Walker Charity and The Chavasee Almshouse, were all formed as a result of charitable giving from individuals from as far back as 1508. All the original dwellings have been – in full or in part – rebuilt since but retain their original objectives to support those in need.
“To meet the Management Team from Lench’s Trust has renewed the commitment of Harper, Marsh and Crump trustees to care and support our residents in the best possible way. The Lench’s Team interaction with the trustees has been so open and informative and now to witness their personal meetings with our residents, we know this is the right decision to engage Lench’s Trust as our Management Agents.”
- Patti Lane, Chair of Harpers, Marsh and Crump Almshouses.
As an example of the rich history, on of the Walsall Almshouse charities was created to benefit 10 of the poorest “certified house keepers” of the parish by Mrs Catherine Walker who left £100 for the purpose when she died in 1756.
The management of the schemes were previously led by GreenSquare Accord, who have approved the handover as part of their stock rationalisation.
“A shared vision, common purpose and a track record of delivering for residents were fundamental search criteria for new Managing Agents. In Lench’s Trust, we have found an excellent match. We look forward with great anticipation.”
- Neil Walker, Trustee from The Henry Boys.
Dominic Bradley, Chief Executive of the Lench’s Trust, said: “We are delighted to have reached this agreement with the four Almshouse Charities. The alignment of our culture and desire to improve later living for those that need it most, means it felt a natural decision. Collectively we are all part of Almshouse Movement with incredible histories that we are keen to preserve. This partnership enables us build a future together to the benefit of our residents.
The new contract arrangements start officially on 30th June, 2025.
