9^th April 2022 is National Winston Churchill Day, a day dedicated to honouring the late Prime Minister – Sir Winston Churchill. As it was with his leadership that steered England through the dark days of World War 2.

Who was Winston Churchill?

Sir Winston Churchill is renowned for being a great wartime leader that guided England, playing a huge role in being victorious against the spread of Nazi party and its fascist ideologies through the War and is considered one of the most significant figures throughout the world. Churchill is also known for his famous moral boosting speech’s – that still to this day gives you a sense of pride (and Goosebumps when listening to the original recordings.).

‘Finest Hour’

“Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war.

If we can stand up to him all Europe may be free, and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands; but if we fail then the whole world, including the United States, and all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more prolonged, by the lights of a perverted science.

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty and so bear ourselves that if the British Commonwealth and Empire lasts for a thousand years men will still say, ‘this was their finest hour’.”

This speech was used by Churchill to try and raise moral of the public throughout the horror that World War 2 was.

‘We shall fight on the beaches’

“The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous states fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be.

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the new world, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

How to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill

It’s simple! Take a moment of your day to have a couple minutes of silence for him – reflecting on his achievements and how he led England through the war. Have a read through his speeches or his history and learn a little bit more about him.
