In the week of its 2nd birthday, residents at William Lench Court celebrated with an evening of fish and chips followed by a grand Skittles tournament with no less than eight teams fighting it out for the coveted Skittles Champions title!  The winners on the night were the Bluebells with residents Betty McGettrick and Rose Humphries, joined by volunteers Ann and Gwen, taking the title with a massive 84 points, 3 clear points ahead of joint 2nd placed teams on 81 points.

This event will be in aid of the Marrakesh Hospice

In order to continue our efforts to raise money for the Marrakesh Hospice, Lench's Close will be hosting a Moroccan Evening in line with the previous themed evenings. As with all of the evenings there will be entertainment and range of food - so in this case lamb, cous cous and all things Moroccan!

The return of the Dog and Horse Racing Nights returned with a bang on Saturday! There were 6 hotly contested dog races and, as always, it was a coupled with a healthy and filling half-time spread of food. The residents at Lench's Close got to enjoy a night of spanish entertainment and spanish food last night, as our Activities Coordinator hosted a spanish themed evening. The entertainer, Francis Mallon, who was very much enjoyed by the residents played an hour and a half set for the residents, beginning with some well-know spanish classics and ending on some great sing-a-longs which all the residents join in with. Although, the night was organised by our Activities Coordinator, he would have not been able to host it, if it had not been for two of the residents, Sheila Clifford (who helped with the preparing and cooking of the food) and John Phillips (who helped with the shopping of all the ingredients)! A massive thank you goes out to the both of them.

A very interested number of residents were lucky enough to hear the story of Lench's Close's very own resident, Cilla, about her role during World War II. The speech, which began at 2pm this afternoon, gave us an insight to the story of Cilla's recruitment at the end of her school years from a public boarding school in Cheltenham to becoming a crucial part of the war effort, which she initially had no knowledge of, as Morse code decoder. She was part of the famous SOE (Special Operations Executive), more specifically the undecorated FANNYS, who played a huge part in winning the war. Although they were not the ones fighting behind enemy lines, as that's what the Agents did, they were equally important as they had to decode, at very high speed and accuracy, over the wireless the Morse code being sent. It was a lovely evening that staff, trustees and residents alike enjoyed. The quiz was organised by our chief executive, Jean-Luc, who did a trek through the Sahara Desert in October 2012 to raise money for the Birmingham St Mary's Hospice and a hospice in Marrakesh. After this, he decided, with support from two of our schemes, to adopt the Marrakesh hospice and pledge support to them. Tonight was the first of many events to raise money for them. It was lovely event at Lench's Close on this Spring afternoon. The highlights being the Easter Bonnet competition (the winning bonnet pictured above) and the tasty array of scones and other confectioneries provided, which was kindly prepared by 3 of our residents - Dave and Veronica Terrington as well as Alan Kirby -  who worked tirelessly to make this event possible. The hospice in Marrakesh provides shelter to up to 700 people at any one time - people with learning disabilities or mental health (who do not receive any state help), poor students, lone parents and homeless people. If you wish to know more about the hospice, visit their website here. Jean-Luc joined a team last October for a trek in the Sahara and for 2 days of hard gardening at the hospice (picture above) - raising over £2,500, thanks for a great part to the generosity of Lench's Trust residents.

 Every couple of months at 7pm on Saturdays or Fridays, there is a chance for residents to go the common room to indulge in some cuisine and culture of another country. It started off with an Italian Themed Evening in early February and the next one promises to be just as entertaining. The entrance fee ranges between £2 and £3 and includes cooked food and some refreshments.

It was a lovely afternoon at Lench's Close on Saturday with tea, coffee and cakes available for 50p and a variety items on several different stalls. Here are some of the stalls!





Many people attended and a lot was bought and sold, by the end of the afternoon a huge £240 was raised for the Resident's Fund trumping last years amout by nearly £100! The money that is put to the Resident's Fund is used for trips and events that all the residents can enjoy - and here Lench's Close this money is rising rapidly! Another fun afternoon with Quinton Youth for Christ was held at William Lench Court on Friday when volunteers kindly gave up an afternoon of their half term break to come along and entertain residents.  Quinton Youth for Christ visit William Lench Court regularly, bringing a vast choice of games and other activities such as the Wii.  Refreshments are provided and a couple of hours of good old fashioned fun are enjoyed followed by freshly baked cakes and a nice cuppa!  We look forward to welcoming the young people to William Lench Court again very soon.

Every Friday at 3pm, a lot of the residents all meet up in the common room to catch up and have a game of cards. The game of choice is New Market, which means you have to bring your Tupences with you and be prepared to take a lot home with you or if you are unlucky be prepared to lose them. Every Wendesday Morning at 10.30am, most of the residents meet up in the common room to catch up, have a chat and grab a cup of coffee or tea. It is the most popular activity here at Tanner's with the majority of the site coming. Some of the residents help out with making and bringing out the tea and biscuits - it's a great chance to socialise.

Each contributes 50p to cover the costs of the tea, coffee and biscuits.

Every Tuesday at 2pm, resident Mike Gent puts on a film for the residents here at Tanner's and a healthy number come over to the common room at Tanner's Close. A new movie is shown every week. You can find out what movies are being show by asking Mike himself or watch out for the posters which will be up on the schemes notice board. A night of 'Italianess' took over for a few hours on Friday evening - there was an explosion of Italian food, Italian fun and Italian fine wine!



To start off with the residents tucked in to some Spaghetti Carbonara and Bolognese, which went down a storm. Evidence of the empty pots below!

We may not have had the fairytale white Christmas but the weather is sure making it up for it today! As with most of Britain, all our sites where covered in many centimetres of snow throughout the whole of today. At the Moseley (pictured above) the snow wasn't enough to put the residents off having their weekly Fish&Chips which was, as always, kindly brought by resident Alan Tandy. Computer classes also continued to take place - plans are also in full force for the Italian Themed Night which will taking place on Friday the 8th of February at 7pm. The New Years Eve party was the final event of 2012, here at Lench's Close, and it sure went out with a bang! A full spread of food was provided (hot and cold!) and games of charades, past the past parcels not to mention the all important raffle. To top a great evening of conversation, food and drink there was a lovely session of karaoke! Residents danced and sang the night away, it was a great night to be part of. A thank you to Alan Tandy and Alan Kirby for helping me with the preperation of the event and huge thank you to Sheila Clifford, who without her help none of which would have been possible! Thu, 03 Jan 2013 16:12:03 GMT<![CDATA[ Christmas Skittles Tournament ]]>On Friday, 21st December, William Lench Court residents gathered in their teams to compete in a Grand Christmas Skittles Tournament.  With team names such as The Recycled Teenagers, The Pole Dancers and Ken & His Hareem there was much hilarity as well as a strong competitive spirit as six teams battled to take the coveted title of Team 2012.  Phil Chawner, our most senior player at 99 years young, made a guest appearance and amazed the group with his enthusiasm and accuracy.  A most enjoyable and entertaining afternoon culminated with our Grand Christmas Raffle, with a wonderful array of prizes having been donated by residents, friends and family.  We wish every one of our residents, their family and their friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

]]>Tue, 25 Dec 2012 09:59:05 GMT<![CDATA[ William Lench Court Residents' Christmas Lunch ]]>Residents at William Lench Court enjoyed Christmas Lunch provided courtesy of Jericho, a social enterprise and our all year round caterers, on Wednesday, 19th December.  A three course Christmas lunch with all the trimmings was served and Residents were invited to partake in a free raffle, first prize being a luxury hamper full of groceries kindly donated within the scheme.  Entertainment was provided by Derrick Cameron, our favourite singer, and all had a truly memorable afternoon packed with singing, dancing, a glass or two of festive cheer and a jolly good meal.

Councillor Caroline Badley joined us as a guest on this special occasion, and enjoyed her time mingling with residents and taking in the atmosphere.  Here is what some of our residents had to say:

I have friends that are both strongly for and strongly against the Royals, so when the news of the Duchess of Cambridge was pregnant hit the front pages, my friends certainly had their own opinions about it!

 

My opinions would most certainly lie on the for section of the Royal Family. Much is said about the amount tax payers’ money which is spent on but many forget how much the Royal Family actually promotes Britain and maintains good relations with many different countries across the world not to mention the tourism they bring to England. It’s not only that, British culture really centres itself around the Royal Family and along with the Union Jack they really give Britain a sense of identify one I personally feel very attached to.

Last Tuesday saw some of the residents of Lench's Close give up their afternoon to give the site a christmassy feel when they put up some lovely decorations. The decorations look fanastic and I thought it would be wonderful to share it all with you. A massive thank you goes to all the residents who helped! Here are some pictures below:






Another successful Race Night rounded off 2012 very nicely as spirits were once again high here at Lench's Close. Thanks to the hard work of three of the site's residents (Shelia, Pauline and Alf) the evening was once again successful! Shelia and Pauline helped organise the bets and present the buffet and Alf provided the food for the buffet. The Race Night will be returning in 2013.

There were no signs of pathetic  fallacy at Saturday's Quiz Night as the atmosphere was warm, relaxed and full of enjoyment! The Quiz, which was written by resident Dave, was a  great mixture of current news, trick questions and picture/music rounds. Once again a lovely light buffet was put on, all included in the very  reasonable 50 pence entrance fee, and there was also a chance to win a  prize in the £1 raffle! Although the night lasted over 3 hours, it didn't  feel like it at all! With spirits high the night ended on a emotional  note, when a few residents stood up and sang eventually turning into a  sing-a-long for all who attended. It was lovely to see the residents at Lench's Close with such a close bond, demostrating the fanastic spirit  there is at the site, one of which I am very proud to be a part of!

Saturday evening saw another successful night put on and organised by residents Sheila and Pauline at Lench's Close. It was very enjoyable night for everyone but especially for those who won some money! For a mere 50 pence a lovely spread of food, nibbles and tea and coffee was provided and of course the entertainment of 6 races all with nail biting finishes. For 50p a race it was a win-win situation as the experience of the evening was definitely worth the money! The next Race Night is scheduled for 3 weeks time on the 8th of December but please watch the Events Calendar for further and exact details. See you all soon!

Saturday, 10th November saw William Lench Court in Quinton hold its annual Festive Table Top Sale, with stalls selling a wide range of festive goods and foods, bric-a-brac, jewellery, new and nearly new clothing, greetings cards and a host of other great Christmas gift ideas.

The event was advertised in the local community with a leaflet drop, and resulted in a fantastic attendance of residents, family, friends and the general public.  Vendors were charged a small fee to hire their table and Lench’s Trust had its very own stall selling a wide range of goods donated by William Lench Court residents, friends and family.

The work of St Mary's Hospice is well know in Birmingham for their wonderful support they give to people living with a life-threatening illness, patients and families - and the residents at Lench's Trust are known for their generosity in support to their local hospice.

It is great that St Mary's Hospice chose to support on this occasion the hospice in Marrakesh which is admirable in its work for the disadvantaged, those left without any state support whatsoever - homeless, people with mental health or learning disabilities, etc... The residents of Lench's Close and their family and friends enjoyed fireworks, fun and food on Sunday for an entertaining night of Bonfire celebrations. The clear and crisp sky made sure that the fireworks could be seen clearly by all the spectators and once the display was over, thanks to several of the residents, everyone could enjoy some warm food! A very enthralling evening that would not have been possible without certain individuals, so a special thanks goes out to all the residents that helped set up the bonfire and prepare/cook the food as well as Errol (Maria's husband) who helped enormously with the firework display.

Fri, 16 Nov 2012 15:20:30 GMT<![CDATA[ Quinton Resident's 99th Birthday! ]]>Thursday 1st November saw William Lench Court resident Philip Chawner celebrate his 99th birthday in style surrounded by family and friends who spent the afternoon chatting and reminiscing before tucking into a sumptuous afternoon tea.  Phil who is quite a character can often be found assisting with the Bingo calling, having a go at darts or popping in to film night just in time for the tea and biscuits.  Phil is much loved by the residents of William Lench Court who joined with family to raise  the roof and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ before blowing out the candles on a very tasty cake.  Happy Birthday Phil, a true gentleman.

Yesterday 4 of our residents (Alan, Rosemary, Joan and Maureen) and I visited the 'Birmingham: its people, its history' exhibition at Birmingham Museum & Art Galleries (BMAG). The exhibition covered five time periods of Birmingham's history; pre-1700, 1700-1830, 1830-1909, 1909-1945 and 1945-today. The first section included artifacts from the Anglo-Saxon era and the entry of Birmingham in the 1086 Domesday book, which described the city having "[...] five villagers and four smallholders with two ploughs [...]" and being worth only "[...] twenty shillings." Birmingham really came into its own when in 1166 Peter de Birmingham aquired a royal charter from Henry II allowing him to hold weekly markets. It was very long before Birmingham was a thriving hub of craftsmen and merchants. Residents made cash donations, donated raffle prizes and baked cakes for sale and a fun and lively morning was enjoyed by all.  We are proud of the efforts made by all concerned, especially in view of the fact that we have already raised more than £400 for both Help for Heroes and St. Mary’s Hospice this year.

Doris' family spared nothing as guests enjoyed first class refreshments courtesy of Jericho, our in-house catering provider, and our Activity Rooms were tastefully decorated with banners and balloons in Doris' honour.  She even had a birthday cake laiden with fireworks!

A fitting party for a perfect lady - very many Congratulations are offered to Doris from all of us.

The day started with the scheme management team of Vera, Heather, Carole and Jayne preparing the activity rooms and village area for a day of fun and laughter consisting of "pin the tail on the camel", "guess the weight of the cake", "name the baby" and many more games and competitions.

The fun commenced at 1.30pm with a skittles tournament. Pictured here are the winning team of Beryl, June, Margaret and Jim, the Bowling Dollies, with Jean-Luc Priez who will be taking part in the trek - the prizes of bottles of Bucks Fizz were gratefully received and enjoyed by the winning team and their friends that very same evening whilst watching the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics!

Titled 'Isles of Wonder', the Ceremony welcomed the finest athletes from more than 200 nations for the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, marking an historic third time the capital has hosted the world’s biggest and most important sporting event. 

The Opening Ceremony reflected the key themes and priorities of the London 2012 Games, based on sport, inspiration, youth and urban transformation. It was a Ceremony 'for everyone' and celebrated contributions the UK has made to the world through innovation and revolution, as well as the creativity and exuberance of British people.

A cheque was presented by resident Frank Clark, who himself served in the forces, to Ken Cook, Help the Heroes Volunteer. Ken spoke of the superb work done to help those wounded in the service of their country - young people with an average age of 21, which means a life in need of support.

Apprentices Barney and Khazan join the cook Carolyn, who is already well known to the residents as she has been working the weekends at William Lench Court for a few months now. We wish them all the very best as they demonstrate their eagerness to learn the many facets of their new chosen profession.

The cafe/restaurant is open to all - residents and non-residents alike - so please do come and taste the delicious meals prepared on site by the team all week around. ]]>Fri, 21 Sep 2012 21:36:07 GMT<![CDATA[ Summer Trips for Residents ]]>On Wednesday 11th July at William Lench Court the residents met at coffee morning to discuss their plans for the summer.

20 residents from William Lench Court and 25 residents from Lench's Close will be going to Weston-Super-Mare on Wednesday 8th August with Den Caney Coaches. Resident Leah Belle from William Lench Court has been working tremendously well with neighbours and friends to get things organised at this end. Scheme Manager Marie Bell has been working equally well at Lench's close to recruit residents for this trip.

Residents are very excited and look forward to a good day out let us hope the weather improves by then and that the summer actually makes an appearance!

    On Monday 9th July at Lench's Close we witnessed residents Dave and Alan as Head Chefs for the day to prepare "Toad in the Hole" for the lunch club for residents of Lench's Close and friends in the community.

Mo Activities Coordinator was assisting the chefs in preparing this amazing meal from all fresh ingredients. Another resident, Maureen assisted the head chefs with moral support.

Residents all gathered at 12:30pm to try this excellent prepared Toad in The Hole served with fresh boiled vegetables followed by Rice Pudding dessert. we did not hear any complaints but only one compliment after another.

This has truly been a new recipe for Mo to try at home and add to his collections.

Residents are looking forward to the Sheppard’s pie which will be prepared by our Resident Dave next week.

Today Wednesday 27th June, we witnessed many residents getting together to cheer the Men in Action while they completed the roof of their new shed.

Residents are all excited and look forward to using this when they are out  in the allotment. We will have more updates in due course from the residents from their green crops which they have and will continue to grow.

Residents at Lench's Close, once again thank Lorna Pusey, Supported Housing Manager for the purchase of this new shed and Jean-Luc Priez, Chief Executive for granting permission.

Resident Mick Gent and his wife Diane Gent have worked tremendously hard to promote this event within the wider community and residents from Falcon Lodge and The Oakes teamed up with Tanner's Close residents to get together for a sing a song and dance along with Stewart.

It has been the most entertaining evening and residents have commented positive thoughts and have taken many happy memories from the Happy Hours. Mick Gent and his wife Diane Gent have also went the extra mile to put on a finger buffet for the residents and guests.

Residents had a raffle draw during a short interval . Tanner's Close would like thank everyone who kindly donated items.

Lorna, Supported Housing Manager, hunted down a suitable shed which will be good use and will last for years to come.

Residents Pete, Brian and Jim are seen in the picture with all their hard efforts putting this shed together - the challenges of flatpack!In the coming days watch out for an update which will show the complete shed (hopefully).

Residents at Lench’s Close have shown great appreciation to the Trust for allowing this shed to be placed alongside their allotment area.

Residents got together on Saturday23rd June in the company of Stewart Conway, a well known Artist in Benidorm where he spends much time (Stweart is from Sutton Colfield!). It was an honour to have him here at our scheme to entertain residents from our three schemes and guests from the community.

Residents truly enjoyed having their feet up and being spoilt with tea/coffee & cakes by our Activities Coordinator, Mo.

We will see Stewart at our other schemes during this week and indeed Stewart will be invited back over the coming months.

]]>Wed, 26 Sep 2012 09:57:43 GMT<![CDATA[ Skittles all the way ]]>Residents and non residents had come together on Saturday 23rd June to have a game of Skittles afternoon in our activities room in William Lench Court.

There was a fair amount of players and some participants watched and cheered as the game progressed.

There was 5 rounds in total and each round, a winner was announced.

We also witnessed a young player, Mst Oliver Bridgwater who also competed with residents who had many years of experience playing Skittles.

On the final count of scores from each round, residents waited patiently to see what rank they came in and it was a delight to open the score board to the residents to see Mst Oliver had outnumbered all players and was ranked at number one. Residents will be taking time out to practice and will want to beat the record of Mst Oliver in the next game.

Residents indeed had a good afternoon with so much laughter and jokes and enjoyed the activity very much.

The craftwork will celebrate the arrival and stay of both the American and Jamaican Olympic teams in Birmingham and for this installation they are using a palette of 6 colours (red, white, blue, yellow, green, black) which are derived from both teams national flags and are also the colours of the Olympic rings logo.

With the help of Vera Dean, a member of William Lench Court's admin team, the residents have now completed their contribution and this will be installed outside the Town Hall in early July in time for the arrival of the 2 teams  in Birmingham.

Well done ladies! ]]>Mon, 24 Sep 2012 19:07:27 GMT<![CDATA[ Lench's Close - Lovely Jubbly Diamond Jubilee ]]>The residents at Lench’s Close were all excited with the Diamond Jubilee party which took place on Friday 8th June. Residents have been working tremendously hard with the Trusts Activity Coordinator, Mo and Scheme Manager Maria Bell, to prepare for the party.

It all started on Sunday 28th May, when many residents went out their way to buy bunting and other Jubilee decorations. It was a hot sunny day (best of British weather) where residents bought out their step ladders and hammers to put up the union flags and bunting all around their front doors and along the drive way. The scheme was very jubilee with lots of blue, red and white and you could see how proud the residents were after a long hard day which many sat outside later with a bottle of bubbly.

Residents were away out and about with family over the Jubilee weekend, only to come back to the celebration party laid on by Trust for all the residents on Friday 8th June.<... ]]>Fri, 31 Aug 2012 07:17:32 GMT<![CDATA[ Residents celebrate the Diamond Jubilee ]]>The residents at William Lench Court were the first to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee with a grand party on Monday 4th June.

The day started early for the Admin Team and willing husbands on Monday 4th June.  9.45am found everyone in the Village Area at William Lench Court moving furniture, putting tables and chairs out in a traditional street party layout, and laying up the tables with Union Flag patterned plates, napkins, cups, flags, party blowers and table confetti.  Residents were interested to see the progress of the preparations, and when completed the tables and bunting and balloons made a wonderful festive picture.

Residents, friends and relatives got into the party spirit by dressing in red, white and blue, and gathering to take their places in time for the festivities to start at 2pm with a Loyal Toast and the singing of the National Anthem... ]]>Sun, 02 Sep 2012 19:05:27 GMT<![CDATA[ BBQ at Tanner's Close ]]>As the British weather hits the high for this year, residents get together in their summer outfits and meet at the BBQ party at Tanner's Close.

Our very own Mick Gent, a resident at the scheme takes great pride in taking lead in master cooking on the BBQ under the heat of the sun, whilst other residents sit around and enjoy the cool breeze in the common room with Hot Dogs, Beef Burgers, Drum Sticks and much more coming of the grills.

Residents have highly enjoyed this afternoon and very much complimented the Chef (Mick Gent) for his excellence in the high standard of the cooking.

The incorporation of Lench's Trust will not affect the services provided to the beneficiaries of the charity nor will it affect its ownership of its housing properties and investment portfolio; however the change is a recognition of the Trust's expanding work and its interest in protecting both its assets for future generations and its Trustees who give their time on a voluntary basis to further the work of Lench's Trust.

Work has started on a new parking bay for an ambulance which will be permanently based at William Lench Court (picture above) and a room has been made available by Lench's Trust to host a paramedics team 24/7 as from 1st June 2012.

This is an excellent news for the Trust, its residents and local residents who will benefit from having an ambulance station at the heart of the community.

William Lench Court - a genuine community resource! ]]>Fri, 21 Sep 2012 02:58:09 GMT<![CDATA[ Easter at William Lench Court ]]>The residents of William Lench Court celebrated their first Easter together in style, with an Easter Egg Hunt on Good Friday and an Easter Bonnet Parade, Cream Tea and Tea Dance on Easter Sunday afternoon.

Good Friday saw around 15 residents & family battling it out to hunt for 24 artificial eggs which had been hidden by staff across three floors of the building and the garden.  Clues were provided, and much laughter ensued as the battle began.  There was a tie for first place, and a chocolate egg and a plate of cupcakes kindly donated by the family of a resident were awarded to the winners.

On Easter Sunday residents were joined by friends and family to pack the Activity Rooms for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of dancing, singing and indulgence!  Those lighter on their feet showed off their waltz, quick step and foxtrot with an enthusiastic audience singing along to a host of old favourite songs.  No-one worried about the calories as they ... ]]>Thu, 26 Jul 2012 10:10:23 GMT<![CDATA[ Our new Maintenance Officer ]]>Mark Boden as the Trust's new Maintenance Officer, and Mark and his van can be seen around our properties all week round.

Through the computer club residents will learn basic commands, i.e. how to switch on a computer, how to access email, how to check on the website the latest news from Lench's Trust.
 
Residents have been very keen to be able to have this class here every week and so the Trust's Activities Coordinator  now delivers this class, working alongside the Scheme's own "Digital Champion", Mick Gent.

It commemorates Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.

It is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland) the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early seventeenth century, and has gradually become a celebration of Irish culture in general.

The examples shown in the TV report were indeed encouraging and it is good to rediscover that the "family" is not defined by the nucleus of 2.4 individuals but should/will extend to many varied forms of relationships (especially in the 21st century) - which in its turn will define the nucleus of the "Big Society" (a term now contaminated because of its political misuse). Tim Cuthbertson, Trustee and previous Bailiff, welcomed the Lady Mayoress, Cllr Anita Ward, and was joined by Charles Gillett, Trustee and 3 ex-Trustees - Christine Kenrick, Ann Warley and Ernie Irwin. Other distinguished guests included Mrs Iris Aylin, Chairperson of Yardley great Trust, and Mrs Buddhi Cheti, Trust of the Harborne Parish Lands.

The afternoon tea was a great success, thanks to Derrick Cameron who entertained all and got many residents off their feet on the dance floor, and to our supporters who provided many prices for our raffle.

Residents were well pleased with the turnout of residents onsite and from outside, and all enjoyed a variety of sandwiches, followed by tea and coffee with a lovely Cupcake.

Residents sat around and enjoyed the music in the background, while some watched out the window at the lovely white snow as it came down.

Residents were overwhelmed to see life at Tanner’s Close on a Saturday. They are already planning their next social evening at Tanner’s Close and how they would like to encourage everyone from the scheme and the community to come and join them.

Residents took great pride to get together and prepare a meal using fresh ingredients. On today’s menu was a baked potato with in house made Cheese & Spring onion filling, Cheese and Tomatoes filling along with beans and Cheese,followed by a fruit salad - all freshly prepared by the residents.

Residents were well impressed with their efforts and are very much looking forward to the next session where they will be baking pasta.

We had our very on onsite builder’s drop by and purchase a meal.

Lench’s Trust celebrated Burns Night at William Lench Court on Tuesday 24th January along with Chinese New Year, while Lench's Close celebrated this on Saturday 28th January part of their social evening.

Burns Night falls on the Scottish Poet Robert Burns' birthday.

What is Burns Night?

Burns Night is a regular date in the Scottish calendar and celebrates the life and works of their national Bard, Robert Burns.
Celebrations amongst family and friends are conducted during a Burns Supper which includes a number of traditions such as piping in the guests, the Selkirk Grace and piping in the haggis.

The Strategy builds on the achievements of the last few years during which the Trust took a big leap forward with its new extracare scheme in Quinton - William Lench Court - and during which it also developed and consolidated its service provision in its other sheltered housing schemes in Moseley and Sutton Coldfield.

However we all acknowledge that our environment has changed considerably within the last five years - not least with a change of government, bringing a new set of priorities for housing and social care, and an economic crisis which will affect our standard of living for the forese... ]]>Sat, 11 Aug 2012 19:37:26 GMT<![CDATA[ Festivities start at William Lench Court ]]>Neighbourhood Officers in Quinton have brought some early Christmas cheer to local elderly residents including residents from Lench’s Trust.

On Monday 12th December local officers helped to organize a Christmas party for 70 elderly residents at William Lench Court. A traditional Christmas Dinner was served with the help of Birmingham City Council part funding with residents paying a little to cover the meal. The 3 meal course was cooked by Jericho, our very own onsite catering team.

A Sergeant from the Safe Haven Team Neighbourhood Policing Team said:

"Local agencies and the police have worked hard this week to ensure the elderly residents have enjoyed a Christmas meal. There is tremendous community spirit in Quinton and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the area a very happy Christmas."

As December approaches, all across the UK Christmas markets are sprouting up and there is no better way to get into the festive spirit. UK Christmas Markets often have continental themes bringing over French, German or Italian traders. The atmospheric markets with stalls stocking great Christmas gift ideas, the snowy back drop, Christmas trees, wooden chalets, plenty of mulled wine and great cuisine and you have one of the great experiences of the Christmas festive season.

For many older people a dog or a cat is a lifeline which gives them joy and a valuable companionship in sometimes difficult and lonely circumstances. It is a cruel and often an impossible dilemna to ask a potential new resident to chose between an apartment in a sheltered accommodation and a much loved pet - and there is no reason why both should not be reconciled.

Of course the Trust had to consider the general wellbeing of all its residents when adopting its new Pet Policy but it is fair to say that this has been well received by all its residents. So far we have 4 dogs at William Lench Court and one at Lench's Close - plus the few "stray cats" who seem to have been adopted by residents over the years!

It was great to see the residents and guests enjoy tasting some of the food from different faiths such as Samosa, Pokara, Palestinian Olives, Herbal Teas, Flapjacks (African Wheat) and more. All gathered new information and were happy to take away some of the learning to be shared with their friends and family.

The Progress & Participation meetings are one of the means in which Trustees, staff and residents interact at each one of our schemes, giving an opportunity for Trustees to update the residents on the Trust's developments over the last 12 months - and for residents to comment on the Trust's services, raise concerns and make direct requests for future improvements. Each year the meetings are well attended and this year was no exception with Junior Bailiff Tony Guest and Trustee Shihab Hossein in attendance.

Residents were pleased to hear from Tony Guest that, notwithstanding the Trust's latest development in Quinton, near to half a million pounds had been spent in our schemes in Moseley and Sutton Coldfield for improvements to the properties over the last 3 years. The Plot was foiled in the night between the 4th and 5th of November 1605. Already on the 5th, agitated Londoners who knew little more than that their King had been saved, joyfully lit bonfires in thanksgiving. As years progressed, however, the ritual became more elaborate.

Soon, people began placing effigies onto bonfires, and fireworks were added to the celebrations. Effigies of Guy Fawkes, and sometimes those of the Pope, graced the pyres. Still today, some communities throw dummies of both Guy Fawkes and the Pope on the bonfire (and even those of a contemporary politician or two), although the gesture is seen by most as a quirky tradition, rather than an expression of hostility towards the Pope.

Anyone working with older people will know that the majority, if not all, dread the idea of being admitted to hospital - and it is not surprising with all the horror stories you hear about malnutrition, maltreatment in some cases, abandon and worsening ill-health (loss of mobility, bed sores, infections...).

In the case of the NHS older people are being made the scapegoat for an inefficient system which has not been able to design in so many years appropriate discharge policies. Until and unless we see the funding actually following the patient there will always be tension between hospital resources and funding for community services.

It is difficult to believe but this is what happened to our brand new scheme in Quinton when suddenly one of the four boilers failed last Wednesday. Unfortunately it took the engineers 3 days to remedy to the problem(s) and all staff were involved in putting in place contingencies to ensure our residents could keep warm, if not in their flats at least in the cafeteria area in the first instance.

I cannot apologise enough to our residents for this incident as I can easily understand their high emotions when it happened. It is sometimes difficult to explain how the technology fails us - and to be sure William Lench Court gives sometimes the impression of an over-engineered building.

Young people from Alum Rock Youth project have been bag packing at their local Tesco store in Hodge Hill and have raised a splended £313.13 in one day.

It is good to see todays youth are participating and supportig elderley to continue to have quality life.

On behalf of Lench's Trust we would like to Thank all the young people and Tesco Store who have helped to raise these funds for the trust. Lench's Trust will offer all young people a a record of achivement certificate.

Residents prepared cakes for the occasion, the Jericho Foundation donated coffee and cakes at William Lench Court and many residents, staff and supporters donated prizes for a raffle... all towards a great cause closed to many people's heart. It was really amazing to see the joyous atmosphere during an event which all enjoyed.

The residents at Lench's Close have a long history of raising money for good causes and it is good to see William Lench Court following their example.

For example Jean-Luc Priez, our Chief Executive, will be attending soon a seminar on "Making sense of the Crisis in Older Adult Social Care" - an issue close to all our minds.

My first day here was a lovely summer's day - July 1st 1993. It felt a little strange because I'd live with my sister all my life and she'd sadly died. I was getting used to living on my own and I didn't know Moseley very well but everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. I settled down very happily. I remember the first Christmas - it was a lovely Christmas, and we had a gentleman playing Father Christmas; it was really nice and homely. I've been happy and settled here. I've seen a lot of changes, and I'm taking life as it comes and being happy with it.

They've always told us it's our home, and we should treat it as our home so we can come and go freely. That's what I like. The restaurant, run by the Jericho Foundation, has been offering a selection of delicious meals to the residents of William Lench Court and to visitors since May this year with an average of 22 meals per day during the week. Following a trial period of pre-ordered lunches they are now open on Saturdays and Sundays to offer a fuller service with teas & coffees, cakes and light snacks available between 9am and 3pm and lunch from mid-day (over 30 meals served over the weekend).

It is great to see more and more visitors join our residents in the pleasant surroundings of the cafeteria.

Lench's Trust set up Residents Committees in both Lench's Close and Tanner's Close in 2009 to engage the residents with senior managers - the Chief Executive, the Supported Housing Manager and the Scheme Manager - to discuss matters pertaining to their schemes. Discussions take place on a 6-weekly basis on matters ranging from finances, the wellbeing of the residents and the maintenance of our properties - all matters of great significance to our residents.

Each Residents Committee is also nominating a representative to join Trustees on the  Almshouse Committee, one of the charity's standing governance committee which looks at the wellbeing of the residents.

Computer club is run at William Lench Court (Quinton) every Friday and Saturday morning from 10:30am and every Monday at 1:30pm at Lench’s Close (Moseley)

Kevin was one of the Trust's longest serving employees and he will be sorely missed by all for his dedication, integrity and gentle manners which won him a special place amongst the residents. As one resident put it "there was never anything too hard for him to drop whatever he was doing and go to help a resident who needed a job doing".

Kevin was sitting in my office 2 weeks ago and I remember commenting how well he looked after a well deserved holiday he had taken in Cape Verde with his family. However we all knew that Kevin was fighting hard and until the last minute he was keen to come to work despite his illness.

Lench’s Close residents were welcomed and invited to have a look around William Lench Court, whose first residents moved in on 16th May this year.  Many familiar faces were recognised as the residents came together, and a jovial atmosphere ensued as the Trust’s new Activities Co-ordinator, Mo Sajad, invited all to partake in a game of Hoy!

More joint activities are planned for the future including a music event in September and a Trust-wide celebration for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

The work will include a comprehensive refurbishment of the communal room with additional space and an interior design similar to William Lench Court, together with a new amenity block with laundry, library, a hairdresser salon and an assisted bathroom. The new facilities will bring Lench's Close up to the standards of William Lench Court - to the great enjoyment of the residents who are amongst the keenest to use their communal areas.

Phase 1 of the work will commence on 5th September with the installation of new boilers to make the site more energy efficient.

Newly appointed residents may now still be of working age - especially when the age of retirement is moving upwards. It is also true that, with advance in living conditions and in health, older people are now able to live a more independent life much longer.     The ceremony was performed by the Deputy Lord Mayor and Mr Philip Chawner, the Trust's eldest resident at 97 (coming soon to his 98th!).

    The Blue Plaque was placed at William Lench Court, our newest scheme in Quinton, which befitted well the occasion to mark the contributions of the Trust from the early 16th century up to the 21st century, thanks to the foresight of William Lench and his friends.

    The surroundings are very nice. It's been very good for me because I have a ground floor flat and there's no strais to negotiate. I have a wet room; I had difficulty getting in and out ofr the bath before. It's all kept very well and we all have our little corners of garden that we look after. So I took over a corner out the back growing some rhubarb. I love rhubarb. It's really been very good for me - we have good facilities and the shop aren't that far away.

    The best thing about it is the convenience of the flat itself. I lived in a three-bedroom house; managing a house when you get to my age is a bit difficult but the flat is very good with it all being on one level.

    At the end of a week of hard work, sweat, laughter and much comradeship 4 out of our team of 7 reached the summit in an heroic spirit - one team member finding even the energy to lighten up a cigar - not bad at some 19,000ft above sea level!

    The team raised £13,000 collectively and this helped the Trust to ensure that William Lench Court would be furbished to the highest standards for the benefits of its residents.

    They provide a helping hand for people who need help with:

    - household tasks such as cleaning and dusting, washing and drying clothes, ironing, shopping;

    - personal care such as getting in and out of bed, getting dressed and undressed, cooking, eating, washing and bathing.

    When admitted to one of our schemes the residents will have a needs assessment done by the Scheme Manager and a Support Plan agreed jointly; this plan will then be reviewed on a regular basis. The role of the Scheme Manager is to ensure that residents have access to the level of care and support they are entitled to and they will direct them to the relevant agencies and organisations.

    Residents who chose to will receive a "morning call" from the Scheme Manager who will ensure that they are well on a daily basis.

    The Trust also provides an out of hours service through the Trustline.

    - You may be an individual willing to give their time as a Befriender, a volunteer working closely with our Scheme Managers to avoid the social isolation of some of our most vulnerable residents or as an Activity Support, working with the staff in faciliting a wide range of activities in our communal facilities.

    - You may be a School or a Youth Group willing to spend time with our residents and take on a project such as developing garden allotments, organising games, coffee mornings or concerts.

    - You may like to donate your time and expertise to support our staff in various practical ways - for example administration, audited accounts and reports     which are submitted each year to the Charity Commission and the Homes & Communities Agency, our two main regulatory bodies.     The scheme, completed in 1993, is set in charming surroundings and has the benefit of a superb communal room which is opened to the wider community - for example Tanner's Close has hosted meetings of the Whitehouse Ladies Club on a fortnightly basis for many years now. Laura Whitehouse, who works for our auditors Mazars, is currently seconded to the Trust to cover the post of Finance Officer.

    The Trust employs a Maintenance Officer - Mark Boden, who joined the Trust in December 2011 after a career in the building industry.    Fri, 13 Jan 2012 09:45:17 GMT    <![CDATA[ History ]]>In 1525 William Lench, a tanner by trade and living in Moor Street, then called Mole Street, decided to leave his wordly wealth to nineteen of his friends by a Deed of Gift dated 11th March 1525. His will of 24th March 1525 asked that the monies be used for works of charity.

    In a Declaration of Trust dated 1540, twelve Trustees were appointed to apply and distribute the income and profits. These twelve good men decided that the money should be spent in two ways:

    1) in repairing the ruined ways and bridges in and around the town of Birmingham
    2) in bestowing the same on the poor living within the said town, where there was the greatest want

    Until 1838 and the incorporation of the city of Birmingham the income of the Trust was used for these two purposes.     As we move into the 21st century our society is ageing; there are now more people over the age of 60 than there are under 16. This trend is set to continue and will have profound implications for all of us as individuals and also for society as a whole. 

    For Lench’s Trust this trend means that it will face an increasing demand to care for and support an ever growing number of our older generation who are facing financial hardship or social isolation.  Over the coming years the Trust, therefore, will be faced with raising larger amounts of funding than ever before in order expand its facilities and provide more extra care services to those in need.

    We endeavour to ensure our residents remain active citizens in the community they live in - within our schemes or within the wider community. With the support of St Mary's Hospice we have also introduced the notion of Compassionate Communities where all care about the members' health and social wellbeing. We provide our residents a wide variety of supportive experiences, interactions and communications.

This is achieved by providing excellent sheltered accommodation in an environment conducive to an active and participative life.

    As the Trust's motto says Lench's Trust aims "to build bridges in the community" to break the social isolation of older people and we hope all will feel welcome to come and join us in our work - as a beneficiary of the charity or their relatives, as a visitor, as a volunteer or as a supporter.

The staff enjoy their new surroundings and feel closer to the residents they help on a day to day basis behind the scene.

    The move will also assist the Trust in keeping its overhead to the minimum, ensuring that its resources are aimed at those most in need - the 200+ residents to whom it provides housing and support.
